Lancaster Holocaust Memorial Day

candle.jpgOver 100 people attended Lancaster Holocaust Memorial Day events at the Town Hall in Lancaster on Thursday 24th January. Candles were lit for the various group persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime; Jews, Roma & Gypsies, gay men and lesbians, people with disabilities, political activists, and those targeted for their religious beliefs.

£300,000 to Play With

play.jpgThe Big Lottery Fund has announced that Lancaster City Council has been successful in its bid for £307,430 of Lottery money. The cash will help the council deliver its new Play Strategy, a five-year plan to develop children and young people’s play services in the district. Green Councillor Maia Whitelegg, Lancaster City Council’s cabinet member for Culture and Young People, said: “This is wonderful news. The investment by the Big Lottery will benefit thousands of children and young people in our district over the next three years and provide lots of new and exciting opportunities for play.” (more…)

School Closures Meeting

He made this statement at a meeting in Lancaster Town Hall of the City Council Task Group that is looking into the issues surounding the proposed closures of Hornby & Skerton High schools (more…)

St George’s Quay Flood Defences

gquay.jpgThe Environment Agency has started work on the second phase of the flood defence scheme at St George’s Quay in Lancaster.The work involves the construction of 450 metres of floodwall to protect property and land on the south bank of the River Lune.

The new stone-clad floodwall, approximately 1.4 metres high, is being constructed along the grass verge (between the river and the road). The existing quayside footpath will be widened and floodgates and steps will be included at regular intervals to provide access.

Castle Ward Cllr Catriona Stamp said “ We hope that the work can be carried out as quickly as possible to minimise the impact on residents.” The city council is allowing residents affected by the roadworks to park on the pavement while their parking bays are blocked off

Climate Change Advice Project Launched

A new climate change and energy advice project called ‘LESS’ launched itself in Lancaster at the end of September.LESS is a new project set up to help people in Lancaster, Morecambe and surrounding areas live more sustainably, and save energy and money. The project will give free energy-saving advice to the public at markets and community events around the district. Advice is also available online via the group’s website (www.lessuk.org) and phoneline.

Tenants Tour Furniture Matters

The event was part of the regular training events organised by Council housing . Green group leader Cllr Chris Coates, who accompanied the group said ” I am really impressed by the way Furniture Matters has grown over the years and the range of services it now offers.”

Recycle Your Tetra Packs

tetra.jpgLancaster City Council in conjunction with Tetra Pak Ltd and the carton industry Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK), has launched a new carton recycling scheme at bring points throughout the district this week. The new project means you can now take used tetrapak cartons to special collection bins at the following locations: Tesco, Morecambe / Asda, Lancaster / George Hotel, Torrisholme /Greaves Park, Lancaster / Booths, Carnforth.

M6 Link Road - Public Inquiry

road.jpg Green Cllr John Whitelegg will be wearing his traffic consultants hat when he appears as an expert witness at the public inquiry into the proposed Heysham M6 Link road. John has been called to speak by groups opposing the road at the inquiry.He is the Managing Director of Eco-Logica Ltd, a transport consultancy based in Lancaster and has appeared as expert witness at many public inquirys.

Lancaster Anti-Academies Meeting

schools1.jpgThe meeting of the Lancaster Anti-Academies Alliance on the 11th July, attended by 60-70 people, heard from speakers including a teacher at Hornby High School, a researcher who has done a lot of evaluation of the (lack of) success of academies and a Preston City Councillor who has direct experience of trying to fight the proposal for an academy in North Preston which is further down the line that the Lancaster proposal. The Preston’s proposed sponsor is Carphone Warehouse.

Council Rejects Northern Bypass

traffic002.jpgIn a sometimes heated debate full Council at its meeting on 20th June voted to reject the northern route for the Heysham M6 Link.  Lancaster City Council is now formally opposed to this road and will withdraw from the public inquiry due to start in July.The Greens submitted a motion saying that “This Council no longer supports the northern bypass”.  (more…)
