Post Office Card Account Under Threat.

subpost.jpgThe Government is currently deciding which company will operate the successor to the Post Office card account (POCA) from 2010. Although the Post Office has made a strong bid, it is far from certain that it will win the contract. The National Federation of SubPostmasters (NFSP) is taking action to secure the contract for the Post Office and a future for the post office network (more…)

Gravestones Vandalised

crimestoppers.jpgAround ten memorial gravestones were damaged  at Skerton Cemetery last week. Police, who are appealing for witnesses, say the stones in the cemetery off Halton Road, Lancaster, were pushed over, causing hundreds of pounds of damage.

Three stone angel figurines were also smashed up during the incident which occurred some time on the night of Monday May 12 or in the early hours of Tuesday May 13. Anyone with information should contact police on 01524 63333 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111

Centros Back With ‘New’ Plans

centros.jpgDevelopers Centros have been back in town showing the latest version of their plans for the controversial redevelopment of the Canal Corridor area of town to local councillors and interested parties. Planning applications for this version of the scheme are due to be submitted in the 2nd week of June.

Legal Challenge to M6 Link Road

traffic001.jpgA High Court challenge has been made to the planning permission for the Heysham/M6 Link Road proposal by Linda Davies, of Russell Drive, Torrisholme. Mrs Davies, a retired social worker and a former teacher at Lancaster and Morecambe College, has secured legal aid enabling her lawyers, Essex-based EarthRights, to contest points of appeal in the planning application, which was approved by the secretary of state last month.

Council House Rents Increase 5%

ridgeestate.jpgAt the January meeting of Cabinet, Green Councillors proposed that Council house rent increases should be less than 5% but were defeated by Labour, Conservative and Lib Dem Councillors voted in favour of the above-inflation increase. At full Council on 27th February, Green Councillors again attempted to get future years’ Council rent rises in line with inflation but were defeated. Cllr Jon Barry said: “It is those on low wages who suffer from Council house rent increases. A year on year increase of 5% is far higher than inflation and cannot be justified”.

Local campaign group Transport Solutions for Lancaster and Morecambe (TSLM), are out to show the public how damaging and polluting the £160 million plan is, and why it is wrong for the local community and the district.

Skerton High School ‘Saved’

skertonsch.jpgSkerton Community High School is no longer under imminent threat of closure by the County Council. An innovative proposal to form a ‘small schools’ federation’ between Hornby and Skerton has made the County Council rethink its plans.The campaign to save the school from closure got incredible support from parents and local people. The two schools will keep their own identities and links with their different communities.

Does Your Street Need a Spring Clean?

street-clean.jpgLater this year Lancaster City council will be launching a new series of ‘deep cleans’ under the banner ‘Street Pride’. Under the scheme special hit squads will move in to streets across the district to give them a thorough clean. Services provided will include street cleaning, gully emptying, minor highway repairs, weeding and tree pruning. (more…)

Lancaster Holocaust Memorial Day

candle.jpgOver 100 people attended Lancaster Holocaust Memorial Day events at the Town Hall in Lancaster on Thursday 24th January. Candles were lit for the various group persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime; Jews, Roma & Gypsies, gay men and lesbians, people with disabilities, political activists, and those targeted for their religious beliefs.
