Animal Care - Save a Pet Auction and night of entertainment. 7pm. Strathmore Hotel, Morecambe. Tickets are £12 each including buffet, entertainment and free prize draw. The night will be filled with music, entertainment and of course the main attraction of the auction. Already some of the items are : a helicopter ride over the Bay for two, seats at a Manchester United Home Games, Whiskey, Prints, Meals Out and loads more. It is hoped a couple of local celebrities will be attending and help make the evening go with a bang so don’t miss out on your tickets as they are limited. Opponents of the controversial Heysham M6 Link road are convinced that their district is still worth fighting for, despite a green light from Minister Hazel Blears for the unpopular scheme. Local campaign group Transport Solutions for Lancaster and Morecambe (TSLM), are out to show the public how damaging and polluting the £160 million plan is, and why it is wrong for the local community and the district.

The Secretary of State has decided to give planning permission for the Heysham-M6 link road. The news is a blow to campaigners trying to bring some sanity into local transport planning.

It is one year since a joint committee of County and City councillors (Lancashire Locals - Lancaster) supported a proposal from Green councillors to adopt a 20mph speed limit on every residential road in Lancaster, Morecambe and Heysham. In that time Lancashire County Council has done precisely – Nothing . Lancaster City councillor John Whitelegg, also an internationally-regarded expert in transport matters Said “The County Council has done nothing to put this idea into practice and nothing to put it out to public consultation. So today I’ve sent a birthday card to County Councillor leader Hazel Harding reminding her that this decision is one year old and that we are still waiting for action”.

Over 100 people attended Lancaster Holocaust Memorial Day events at the Town Hall in Lancaster on Thursday 24th January. Candles were lit for the various group persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime; Jews, Roma & Gypsies, gay men and lesbians, people with disabilities, political activists, and those targeted for their religious beliefs.

The Lunesdale Campaign for Real Ale’s Winter Pub of the Year Award has been won by The Royal Hotel at Heysham. The award recognises the Hotels efforts in looking after a range of beers, many which are locally produced, together with providing a warm welcome.

The Maritime Festival will be back at Glasson Dock once again for 2008 thanks to sponsorship from Seatruck Ferries in Heysham. Details of the festival, which will take place as always over the Easter weekend, are still to be confirmed. But the Glasson Maritime Weekend 2008 will, feature the usual array of maritime-themed entertainments and activities such as: ships-in-bottles and knot-tying and ropework demonstrations; coracle making and kipper smoking displays.
County Cllr Chris Coates Said “ This is great news for Glasson, but we really must sort out the long term situation with regards to the festival we can’t go on with this last minute arrangements year after year.”

Green County Councillor Chris Coates has criticised colleagues at County Hall for accepting an invitation to visit BAE Systems at Salmesbury. In a letter to all County councillors Cllr Coates said “I have no wish to be associated with a company that appears to think that bribery and fraud are acceptable business practice and I think that the visit of County Councillors to the site at Salmsebury brings the County Council into disrepute.” (more…)

The Big Lottery Fund has announced that Lancaster City Council has been successful in its bid for £307,430 of Lottery money. The cash will help the council deliver its new Play Strategy, a five-year plan to develop children and young people’s play services in the district. Green Councillor Maia Whitelegg, Lancaster City Council’s cabinet member for Culture and Young People, said: “This is wonderful news. The investment by the Big Lottery will benefit thousands of children and young people in our district over the next three years and provide lots of new and exciting opportunities for play.” (more…)

Urban Splash have announced that the Midland Hotel will re-open in June. Morecambe’s famous art-deco Hotel will once more be open for guests. Green Cllr Chris Coates said “ I attended one of the last parties held in the Midland before it closed back in 2000 – I am looking forward to seeing the ‘new’ Midland restored to it’s former glory.”
