Greens say Council should promote the market

As tht council’s cabinet meets to discuss ideas for the future of Lancaster’s Indoor Market Green party councillor John Whitelegg has called on the Council to look at fresh ideas to improve the market. Cllr  Whitelegg said:  “We need to be considering innovative ideas such as: handing over control and responsibility for running the market to the traders themselves, promoting the market in every council publication and in all tourism literature, establishing a  loyalty system to encourage regular use of the market, supporting a “friends of the market” organisation and inviting the 13,000 people who signed the petition and the 4,000 who signed up to the Facebook initiative to join. In the longer term we could set up a Lewes style local currency system for use in the market.”

Making a Difference in John O’Gaunt

A City Council byelection has been called for April 1st in the John O’Gaunt Ward in Lancaster following the resignation of Labour councillor Jim Blakeley. The Green party has selected Ian Chamberlain to fight the seat and join current Green Councillor Jude Towers to represent the Primrose, Moorlands, Bowerham and Newlands areas of the town.

Ian went to Lancaster University and now works for the National Coalition Building Institute in Morecambe as a producer for local radio. In his spare time he is a volunteer carer for Lancashire Council Volunteer Service. Ian said  “I decided to stand as a councillor because I’ve been impressed with how Lancaster Green Party has supported community campaigns I’ve been involved with. Another elected Green will help strengthen the work we do and help make Lancaster City Council more accountable to local people. ” (more…)


Greens Lead Support to Save Market

Lancaster  market has had a reprieve after the Full Council budget meeting voted to look into ways to reduce the financial losses whilst keeping an indoor market in the city . This followed a campaign by market traders and residents supported by the local Green Party to save the market.

Earlier  in February Labour, Conservative, Lib Dem and Independents councillors had voted to close the market and bring in a discount supermarket, with only the two Green Party  cabinet members voting to keep the market open. (more…)


Plan BEE

The Co-operative has launched Plan Bee, a campaign and 10-point plan to help save the bee. Worried about the disappearance of bee colonies in recent years the campaign aims to get research going on the causes of the losses and to get people involved in saving bees.

As part of the Campaign the Dukes Cinema is showing the film The Vanishing of Bees on Thursday 21st of Jan at 6.30pm

Call for Better Gritting

Green councillors have called on the County Council to prioritise gritting of pavements rather than just major roads.  John O’Gaunt ward Councillor Jude Towers said: “Many people, including me, have fallen over in the last few weeks and there seems virtually no gritting of pavements outside the town centre. Lots of old people have been rendered virtually housebound – especially in hilly areas such as Moorlands.” (more…)
