The next meeting of the Action Group for Fleetwood will discuss issues affecting the town, including the setting up of a town council, the smell from the sewage works, Fleetwood Masterplan, CCTV and the barrage project.

The Green Party’s visually stunning broadcast for the local elections was broadcast on Tues 15th April at 18.25 on ITV and 18.55 on both BBC1 . The film,produced by Contaminant Media and animated by sought-after Shroom Studios, uses no actors; instead real people were invited to discuss their concerns, making a compelling argument for Green solutions for a more affordable and fairer society.

Gina Dowding, the Green prospective parliamentary candidate for Lancaster & Fleetwood, shared a platform with the Mayor of Delhi, Ms Arti Mehra, at the Local Government Association national conference in Liverpool on Wednesday 12th March. The former Lancaster City Council cabinet member joined the Indian Mayor in a panel discussion on the threats posed by climate change and the sorts of actions that local councils could take to reduce carbon emissions and to prepare for the effects of global warming. Gina Dowding, the Green Party candidate for the Lancaster and Fleetwood parliamentary constituency was the main speaker at a public meeting at Milton St Youth and Community Centre in Fleetwood on Wednesday, March 5.
An audience of local Fleetwood reisdents heard the former Lancaster City Council cabinet member outline what she considered to be the key issues facing Fleetwood in the future. These ranged from the threat posed by climate change to the need for affordable housing and the possibilities for a sustainable fishing industry.

The Lighthouse Post Office in Fleetwood is losted among proposals announced on January 22nd to close sub-post offices across the County.The closure threat is part of a nationwide plan to axe up to 2500 Post Office from the network which has been met with anger and disbelief from residents and local councillors. Green County Councillor Chris Coates, said “Axing local post offices affects some customers more than others; those on lower incomes, people with disabilities and carers, female customers and those over 65. What used to be a public service is now becoming a purely cash driven organisation.”

The Green Party has selected former Lancaster City Councillor Gina Dowding as the prospective parliamentary candidate for the new Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency. Gina said: “I am very enthusiastic about standing for the Greens again in the general election and am very optimistic about our prospects in this new constituency.” (more…)

A new Action For Fleetwood Group was launched at a packed public meeting on Tuesday - October 23 at the Warrenhurst Road Senior Citizen’s Centre. Residents backed the moved to form a group to campaign on local issues such as; the terrible smell from the Jameson Road sewage plant, the Fleetwood Masterplan and the future of the pier. The meeting also heard calls for a Fleetwood Town Council to be formed. A steering committee was elected and further meetings and a website are planned.

Controversial plans by Energy company Canatex to store natural gas in underground salt caverns at Preesall have been thrown out by planning inspectors. Canatex wanted to store more than one million tonnes of gas in salt caverns beneath the Wyre estuary. A public inquiry was held and the plans have now been dismissed by the Communities Secretary Hazel Blears. More than 10,000 residents initially protested against the plans.
