Fleetwood Action Group Meeting

fleetwoodmount.jpgThe next meeting of the Action Group for Fleetwood will discuss issues affecting the town, including the setting up of a town council, the smell from the sewage works, Fleetwood Masterplan, CCTV and the barrage project.

Green Gains Across the Country

rosette.jpgLast weeks local elections saw gains for the Green Party across the country. The biggest gains were in Norwich where the party won 3 seats and became the official opposition on the council. The party also won seats in Solihull and Cambridge places where it had previously no councillors. In the London Assembly election the Green vote increased and the parties two assembly members were returned with over 8% of the vote. (more…)

Fleetwood Gets Green Machine

mower.jpgA new green machine will keep Fleetwood’s grassy areas neat and tidy without costing the earth. The ride-on Hybrid 2500E mower has been purchased by Wyre Borough Council as part of its pledge to improve air quality and reduce pollution in the borough. Gina Dowding said ” This is just the sort of thing that council’s need to be looking at to reduce thier carbon footprint.”
Powered by a mixture of electric and diesel, the mower is much more environmentally friendly than its predecessor and has the potential to cut fuel consumption by up to 30%.

Green Party Gets Animated

The film,produced by Contaminant Media and animated by sought-after Shroom Studios, uses no actors; instead real people were invited to discuss their concerns, making a compelling argument for Green solutions for a more affordable and fairer society.

Going Green from Lancaster to Delhi

delhi.jpgGina Dowding, the Green prospective parliamentary candidate for Lancaster & Fleetwood, shared a platform with the Mayor of Delhi, Ms Arti Mehra, at the Local Government Association national conference in Liverpool on Wednesday 12th March. The former Lancaster City Council cabinet member joined the Indian Mayor in a panel discussion on the threats posed by climate change and the sorts of actions that local councils could take to reduce carbon emissions and to prepare for the effects of global warming. Green Party Fleetwood Public Meeting

gina-face.jpgGina Dowding, the Green Party candidate for the Lancaster and Fleetwood parliamentary constituency was the main speaker at a public meeting at Milton St Youth and Community Centre in Fleetwood on Wednesday, March 5.

An audience of local Fleetwood reisdents heard the former Lancaster City Council cabinet member outline what she considered to be the key issues facing Fleetwood in the future. These ranged from the threat posed by climate change to the need for affordable housing and the possibilities for a sustainable fishing industry.

Fleetwood Post Office Closure

po-closure.jpgThe Lighthouse Post Office in Fleetwood is losted among proposals announced on January 22nd to close sub-post offices across the County.The closure threat is part of a nationwide plan to axe up to 2500 Post Office from the network which has been met with anger and disbelief from residents and local councillors. Green County Councillor Chris Coates, said “Axing local post offices affects some customers more than others; those on lower incomes, people with disabilities and carers, female customers and those over 65. What used to be a public service is now becoming a purely cash driven organisation.”

Brown’s Nuclear Plans Spell Disaster

biohazard.jpgGreen MEP for South-East England Caroline Lucas today condemned Gordon Brown’s plans announced to MPs by Business Secretary John Hutton, which commit Britain to a future of nuclear power.

Dr Lucas, a long-standing campaigner against the use of nuclear energy, attacked New Labour’s “love affair with nuclear” as “a dangerous, irresponsible and costly distraction from the real challenge of tackling climate change”, following today’s Government decision which will spark a new generation of nuclear facilities in the UK. Ballot to Become First Green MP
