From the start of the school year, Lancashire’s catering staff will be cooking up their usual treats using only free range eggs. The decision will affect more than half a million eggs each year.

Although the Post Office has made a strong bid, it is far from certain that it will win the contract. Glasson School Wins Green Prize

glasson-school.jpgGreen-minded school children from Thurnham Glasson CE Primary School have scooped top prize for their recycling efforts. 37 primary schools in the area have been enthusiastically collecting batteries as part of a Lancashire County Council sponsored competition.
Glasson County Councillor Chris Coates said after the award “This is a real achievement for such a small village school. Everyone involved should be congratulated.”” Glasson School scooped the first prize of a brand new laptop computer. During the latest round of the ‘Tune in to Battery Recycling’ scheme, schools in Lancaster have collectively diverted 38,300 batteries from landfill.

Glasson Marina Plans Must Go To Planning

glassonm.jpg Plans by British Waterways Marinas Ltd (BWML) to redevelop the canal basin at Glasson without putting in any planning application were ruled to be out of order by the Government Office for the North West. Chris Coates,Green County Councillor for Glasson said “…this is what everyone has been calling for from the start. The marina company have been arrogant and somewhat foolish in pushing ahead without taking into account the views of local people.” (more…)

Cllr Chris Coates Addresses Scottish Party

cd.jpgLancashire Green County Councillor Chris Coates was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of Scottish Greens in Castle Douglas in Galloway last week. Cllr Coates spoke about the success of the Green Party in Lancaster and there was a lively discussion on how that might be repeated in South West Scotland.
Also speaking at the meeting was Cllr Kieran Wild from Glasgow Green Party.

Celebrate the Easter Maritime Festival

maritime-fest08.jpgFor the second year running, the focus of Lancaster District’s Maritime Festival will be the historic port of Glasson Dock, on the Lune estuary where a branch of the Lancaster Canal also meets the sea. This year the Village Hall will be the main concert venue. There will also be entertainments and activities on the open green areas adjacent to the canal marina and sea dock. The village’s Dalton Arms pub and the Stork Inn, at nearby Conder Green, have also signed up as shanty and sea song venues. On Sunday, Lancaster Maritime Museum will also host an afternoon of sea songs and shanties.

Glasson Post Office Closure

glassonpo.jpgProposals announced on January 22nd to close sub-post offices across the district have been met with anger and disbelief from residents and local councillors. The closure threat is part of a nationwide plan to axe up to 2500 Post Offices from the network. Glasson County Councillor Chris Coates, said “Axing local post offices affects some customers more than others; those on lower incomes, people with disabilities and carers, female customers and those over 65. What used to be a public service is now becoming a purely cash driven organisation.”
