More than 200 people have sent in objections to the plans proposed by developers Centros for the canal corridor area of Lancaster city centre.The city council has recieved 206 objections to the proposals, which are due to go before the council’s planning committee next month

The challenge by a Torrisholme resident to the Secretary of State’s decision to uphold the planning application for the Heysham M6 link road will be heard in the High Court on the 28th/29th August.The case against the road is being brought by Mrs Davies, a former teacher at Lancaster & Morecambe college, who has lived in Torrisholme for 40 years. A conference of Green councillors from across the country has pledged to use new legal powers to create thousands of jobs through green regeneration projects. The Association of Green Councillors was responding to the new Sustainable Communities Act, which gives local authorities the right to request new powers from central government to promote local economies. Is information about you on the electoral register being sold to private companies? Green Councillors have been investigating the situation here in the Lancaster district. According to Council officers, the Council must supply a copy of the edited register to any person who pays the fee. Whilst the Council does not specifically advertise this, if requested, it must, by law, supply the information. Under these regulations, Lancaster City Council sold parts of the edited register to three companies over the last financial year. (more…)

A new paper entitled The Big Green View has been launched by the Green party in North Lancashire, covering Lancaster, Morecambe, Fleetwood and all places in-between. The paper covers green politics from a wide variety of different angles

A packed public meeting organised by residents action group It’s Our City on Tuesday 24th June 2008 in Lancaster Town Hall heard speakers deliver damning criticism of the revised planning application submitted by developers Centros for the shopping centre and carpark on the canal corridor area. There was a full cycle rack outside Morecambe town hall this week as councillors took part in national cycle to work day. At the invitation of the Green group a number of councillors from other parties joined the Greens in backing the districts cycle demonstration town team’s call for people to get on thier bikes and cycle to work.

The way the decision to site a new mental health unit on Royal Albert fields in Lancaster was taken is to be looked into by Lancashire County Council’s health scrutiny committee. A task group is being set up to consider whether the site selection consultation by Lancashire Care Trust was properly carried out. (more…)

Following coverage in the local Citizen newspaper of the discovery of a hidden ‘litter trap’ in Burrow Beck. (At the point where it goes under the canal at Deep Cutting via a sump.) Prompt action by local Green Councillor Chris Coates and City Council Direct Services has seen the eyesore cleaned up in double quick time. (more…)

Appletree Nursery & Children’s Centre on Milking Stile Lane threw open its doors on Thursday 8th May for a Vision Day. People from the local community were invited to come and look around the newly extended and refurbished building and add their voice to the vision of the new children’s centre.
Green County Councillor Chris Coates Said after his tour “The facilities here are superb. The classroom in the nursery is equipped with the highest quality play equipment and the sensory room is a real treat.”
Appletree has extended it range of services and is hoping to expand further in the future with plans for a community garden on land next to the nursery.For more information see the Appletree website.
