Residents’ to Park at University

parking-sign.jpgFollowing a PACT meeting with the University of Cumbria to discuss the impacts of student and staff parking on local residential streets, the University has now offered local residents the opportunity to park for free after 5pm in the carpark off Coulston Road.

The scheme is designed to aid residents who return home in the evening and find they cannot park on their street. Residents can contact the University of Cumbria’s Estates Department and request a resident permit which then allows them to park in the Coulston Road carpark for free after 5pm.

Representatives of the University of Cumbria have also agreed to attend future PACT meetings to keep residents up to date on their progress on parking and travel issues at the University and the impact on the local community - posters and fliers will be distributed to advertise these meetings.

Commenting on a new initiative from the University of Cumbria, John O’Gaunt Green Councillor Jude Towers said, ‘I would like to acknowledge and thank the John O’Gaunt community policing team for all their hard work with the University of Cumbria, the results of which, residents are now seeing with some action from the University to address the ongoing problems of parking and traffic in the ward. A permit scheme for residents to park free in the University’s Coulston Road carpark after 5pm is a good start, but there is still a long way to go. I look foward to seeing the implementation of a raft of other measures by the University, such as a comprehensive travel plan and coordinator to deliver it and better communications between the University and the local community in the near future.’
