Call for Safe Crossing on Greaves Road
Green Councillors in Scotforth West ward are calling on Lancashire County Council to install a pedestrian crossing near the Greaves Park children’s play area before a fatal accident occurs. A 10-year old girl was knocked down and injured last week while attempting to cross Greaves Road. Councillor Emily Heath has asked County Council officers to take a preventative approach to road safety concerns and to review the need for safe crossing facilities.
Cllr Heath said, “The new play area in Greaves Park has been a huge success, but as a result more children want to cross the road near the Pointer Roundabout. Roundabouts are difficult places to cross at the best of times, so we urgently need some proper crossings to make it as safe as possible. The priority must be to prevent further accidents from occurring.”
The accident on April 28th resulted in the Scotforth Primary School pupil sustaining facial injuries. The driver’s observance of the speed limit meant the accident did not have a more serious outcome. Green Councillors have previously requested pedestrian crossings on Greaves Road and Bowerham Road, but the County Council has strict criteria for new crossings including the number of accidents leading to injury. Following this latest request County Officers have now agreed to review the issue.
Green Cllr Jane Fletcher added “Children’s safety at the Pointer Roundabout is also jeopardized at school start and end times because it has been difficult to find cover-staff for the lollipop lady on long-term sickness leave. I am working with County Officers to find willing individuals for occasional paid cover.” If you are able to help please contact Cllr Jane Fletcher Tel: 01524 66793.
