Centros Back With ‘New’ Plans
Developers Centros have been back in town showing the latest version of their plans for the controversial redevelopment of the Canal Corridor area of town to local councillors and interested parties. Planning applications for this version of the scheme are due to be submitted in the 2nd week of June.
The new Centros proposals can be downloaded here:
In spite of some changes the plan is still very much like the last time round:
- There will be an 800 space car park which is 500 more than currently available
- The development is still based on a very large new Debenhams store
- The development will add several thousand extra car trips each day on an already congested road system
Commenting on the latest plans,Bulk Ward Councillor John Whitelegg said: “I have always been unhappy with the scale of the proposed canal corridor shopping centre development and I still am unhappy. It will damage existing retailing in Lancaster city centre and it will damage Morecambe. The proposal is for a completely new shopping centre that will be built at a time when our existing city centre is looking very tired and sad. We need a major programme of investment and improvement in the existing centre and not a new one built around an 800 space car park on the other side of the one way system”
