Lancaster Market Sell Out
The Council’s cabinet recently voted to look at replacing the market tenants with a single occupier (a position opposed by the Greens). This was because of a large yearly deficit caused by the Council’s decision in the 1990s to sell the market site and then rent it back off the owner. The Green Party thinks that the market is an important centre for local employment in the town.
Green Councillors would rather see the Council :
1. Try to buy back the freehold of the market. The interest would be much less than the current rent.
or.2. Fill half of the ground floor with a single trader. This would mean that all of the space is let and would significantly reduce the deficit.
