Going Green from Lancaster to Delhi
Gina Dowding, the Green prospective parliamentary candidate for Lancaster & Fleetwood, shared a platform with the Mayor of Delhi, Ms Arti Mehra, at the Local Government Association national conference in Liverpool on Wednesday 12th March. The former Lancaster City Council cabinet member joined the Indian Mayor in a panel discussion on the threats posed by climate change and the sorts of actions that local councils could take to reduce carbon emissions and to prepare for the effects of global warming.
Ms Dowding was called in to replace the Green Party’s national principle speaker Sian Berry who had to pull out of the conference. After the speech Gina said “ Across the world local government needs to rise to the challenge posed by the effects of the changing climate. Tackling Climate change is as much an issue of leadership as its is of changing to low carbon technologies.”
As mayor of Delhi, Mrs Mehra is responsible for a city of 16m people, and leads a 272-strong council. She said: “If we fail to recognise the urgency of climate change, it will be criminal on our part. We have not inherited the world from our forefathers, we have borrowed it from our children.
