Homeless Shelter Fails to Open

santa2.jpgLancaster City Council’s Homeless Shelter failed to open in time for Christmas leaving vulnerable young people sleeping rough over the holiday period. The shelter, a joint project between the Council & the YMCA was due to open back in September, But delays in building works mean it is still closed.

Cllr Maia Whitelegg, who recently took part in the `Don’t Duck the Issue’ fund-raising campaign for the Shelter, said “I am really at the end of my tether. There are homeless 16year-olds being admitted to hospital with hypothermia, others camping in tents and still the shelter is not ready.Council officers say they have had to do building work and redecorate the house, but the situation is so serious that they should have just got on with it so that young, vulnerable people had somewhere to go at Christmas.”
