Controversial proposals to build housing on Fleetwood’s beach have been axed. The scheme had been put forward by consultants King Sturge as part of the town’s Masterplan as an alternative to proposals to build on the seafront pitch and putt green. But the proposals have been dropped after English Nature advised that the beach was protected as a site of special scientific interest.
A number of the Masterplan ideas aimed at regenerating Fleetwood have met with opposition from local residents. These have included turning the Pier into flats and building houses on the seafront pitch and putt green. The latest ‘beach housing’ proposal would have seen a pier type of structure being erected to reclaim building land from the beach opposite the Mount pavilion.
