Lancaster & District Green Party has called on the local Vision Board to reject plans for a nuclear future for the district. At its December meeting members backed a call for the Heysham site to be rejected as a possible location for a new generation of nuclear power plants. Green Party Chair Gina Dowding said after the meeting “Going nuclear should not be part of any vision for the district. For 50 years the nuclear industry has failed to deliver on its promise to deliver cheap energy for all and has failed to sort out what to do with highly radioactive waste.”
British Energy, which owns the Heysham plant, recently revealed a list of eight sites across the country which it has earmarked for development. Lancaster Vision Board is due to meet with British Energy to discuss the proposal.
Nuclear power has been an enormous financial disaster for the UK .The civil nuclear power programme has been responsible for a loss of 32 billion pounds. This would have built hundreds of hospitals and funded tens of thousands of extra teachers, nurses, places for the homeless and youth facilities. The Green Party believes that the construction of new nuclear power stations will lead to increases in electricity bills and has produced a report detailing how to achieve reductions in carbon emissions much more cheaply through investment in energy efficiency, demand reduction and renewable energy.
