Lancaster Anti-Academies Meeting
The meeting of the Lancaster Anti-Academies Alliance on the 11th July, attended by 60-70 people, heard from speakers including a teacher at Hornby High School, a researcher who has done a lot of evaluation of the (lack of) success of academies and a Preston City Councillor who has direct experience of trying to fight the proposal for an academy in North Preston which is further down the line that the Lancaster proposal. The Preston’s proposed sponsor is Carphone Warehouse.
Lets us Know your thoughts on the Lancaster Academy proposals
All the speakers highlighted disadvantages to local schools being turned into academies and the way the Government is pushing this through without any proper democratic consultation.
The meeting resolved unanimously to;
- campaign against the proposed Academy in Lancaster
- campaign to keep Hornby, Skerton and Central High School open to continue to provide quality education for Lancaster children
There were ideas for actives to boost the campaign including holding a weekly stall in market stall, write to County Councillor and local MPs expressing opposition and calling a public demonstration to oppose the Academy in the early autumn term.

I couldn’t make the meeting but I think it’s sounds like the right decision was come to. Does anyone know what is happening with the proposed ideas?

Hi
The County Council are currently trying to identify a commercial sponser for the Lancaster Academy. Without much luck it would seem. The deadline was the end of July. It has been revealed that Carphone warehouse are the proposed sponsers of the Preston Academy, but none has been identified for Lancaster. Lancaster & Morecambe College have expressed an interest in being sponsers but the County don’t seem interested in that option.
