Friends of Scotch Quarry on the pull

knotweed.jpgThe Friends of Scotch Quarry group were out on the pull on Saturday! Over the past twelve months, we have been regularly pulling up Japanese Knotweed from the quarry in an attempt to weaken and eventually kill this invasive weed.

Japanese Knotweed is not native to the British Isles, but is extremely prolific and very, very hard to kill. It is also a notifiable weed, which means no part of the plant can be removed from the site, to help prevent its further spread. Once pulled out by its roots, the Japanese Knotweed is piled up away from paths to rot down over the course of the summer. This is the fourth time we have pulled up the same patch of Japanese Knotweed in Scotch Quarry and there are definite early signs of success, where the weed is starting to thin out and die back. The Friends group plans to go back at least twice more this summer / early autumn and pull up any re-growth.
