Proposals for a new ‘Science Park’ to be built on countryside near the University (off Bailrigg Lane and the A6) will create long queues of traffic at the Boot & Shoe traffic lights, and through Galgate and back onto the M6! This is the prediction in the developer’s own planning application. The out-of-town business park includes plans for a 700 space car park.
University Green Party member Ian McCulloch who works at the Lancaster Environment Centre said
“Whilst I support the idea of providing space for new knowledge-based businesses in this district, I have serious concerns about the environmental impacts of what is currently being proposed. There is lots of previously developed ‘brownfield’ land in Lancaster which would be better locations for the Science Park. Ideally it should be built close to where large numbers of people live (particularly areas of relatively high unemployment), and should be easily accessible by public transport, walking and cycling.”
The proposal has not yet been given planning permission, having been blocked by the Highways Agency because of their concerns about traffic impacts on the motorway, so there is still time to make a difference. There are already some Green Party councillors and local residents who are campaigning on this issue – if you would like to help please contact us.
