Packed Meeting Opposes Land Sale

no-tesco.jpgA packed meeting at Scotforth Parish Hall heard speakers challenge the sale of council land at Lawsons Bridge, to the South of Lancaster, thought to be the site for a proposed new supermarket. Residents listened to Scotforth Green Councillors Emily Heath & Jane Fletcher outline the way that the council has tried to sell the land without following proper procedure and give details of the environmental impact of large supermarkets.

The meeting was also addressed by the Chairman of Scotforth Parish Council, Mike Hardy , who painted a picture of increasing traffic chaos and congestion if the proposal goes ahead. Tim Hamilton-Cox, from the Its Our City group, looked at the rationale being used to justify the sale of the land and questioned its validity. He suggested the potential impact on existing food shops in Lancaster. He also gave details of residents groups around the country who are opposing Tesco’s attempts to bulldoze their way into their towns.

(Tesco are thought to be the supermarket chain most likely to win a bidding war if the land is put out to tender.)

The meeting ended with discussion on ways that the sale of the land could be opposed. These include: applying for Town Green status for the land, lobbying local councillors & caninet members and planning more protests.
