Homeless Shelter Fails to Open
Lancaster City Council’s Homeless Shelter failed to open in time for Christmas leaving vulnerable young people sleeping rough over the holiday period. The shelter, a joint project between the Council & the YMCA was due to open back in September, But delays in building works mean it is still closed.

No Houses on Fleetwood Beach
Controversial proposals to build housing on Fleetwood’s beach have been axed. The scheme had been put forward by consultants King Sturge as part of the town’s Masterplan as an alternative to proposals to build on the seafront pitch and putt green. But the proposals have been dropped after English Nature advised that the beach was protected as a site of special scientific interest.

Marina Plans May Pollute River
British Waterways Marinas Ltd (BWML) were put on the back foot at a packed and lively meeting at Glasson Dock village Hall earlier this week. At the start of the meeting Lancaster City Council’s chief planning officer, Andrew Dobson, announced that he had asked for a full Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) to be carried out. (more…)

Greens Reject Nuclear Vision
Lancaster & District Green Party has called on the local Vision Board to reject plans for a nuclear future for the district. At its December meeting members backed a call for the Heysham site to be rejected as a possible location for a new generation of nuclear power plants. Green Party Chair Gina Dowding said after the meeting “Going nuclear should not be part of any vision for the district. For 50 years the nuclear industry has failed to deliver on its promise to deliver cheap energy for all and has failed to sort out what to do with highly radioactive waste.”

Glasson Marina Plans

Wyre Council finally acts to End Smell
Wyre Borough Council has agreed a timetable of action for improvements at the Fleetwood Wastewater Treatment Works that will hopefully be a start to get rid of the smell that regularly blights the town.The plan was drawn up following a meeting between the council and United Utilities last week.

Bulk Ward Tree Planting
To celebrate National Tree Week (21st Nov. – 2nd Dec.), Green Cllrs in Bulk organised tree planting events with local children in schools across the ward. Events have taken place over ‘Environment Weekend’ on 26th Nov. at Christ Church Primary School and on a ‘Tree Planting Day’ at Ridge County Primary School on 25th Nov.

Damside Street Bollards
The City Council has finally acted against car drivers who have been using the corner of St. George’s Quay and Damside Street as a makeshift car park. After months of complaints from passers by and local businesses, John Foster of Lancashire County Engineers has confirmed to local councillor Jon Barry, who acted on the complaints, that bollards are to be placed on the corner to prevent vehicles parking. City Councillors have long wanted to prevent parking on the corner but according to County staff, identifying who owned the land was one reason for a delay to something being done.
